Employers are facing challenges as states continue legalizing Marijuana, although it remains illegal under federal law. But current laws do not require an employer to accommodate on-duty drug use or prohibit an employer from taking action if an employee is working under the influence of Marijuana. Current methods for detection of drugs include urine, hair and blood samples. But Quest Diagnostics has recently come out with a superior product for oral fluid testing Oral-Eze. We spent the afternoon with them learning about the product.
What is oral fluid testing?
One of the key benefits of oral fluid (aka saliva testing) is its ability to detect the presence of drugs almost immediately after use. More specifically, a laboratory-based oral fluid test can detect recent drug use for up to 24-48 hours. While oral fluid testing has a slightly shorter window of detection than urine, it demonstrates a higher positivity rate for almost all drugs and more than twice the positivity rate for Marijuana. Another important advantage is that oral fluid collections are observed, helping reduce the opportunity for a donor to alter or tamper with their drug specimen.
How Oral-Eze is different
The design of Oral-Eze emphasizes accuracy and quality control for both screening and confirmation drug testing. It features a built-in sample adequacy indicator to show the test administrator that a sufficient amount of oral fluid has been collected during an observed collection. Especially with the spike in Marijuana positivity rates, from 5.1% in 2013 to 8.9% in 2016, oral fluid testing will be the most accurate way to tell if someone is currently under the influence of Marijuana at work.
