Breath Alcohol Testing (BAC)

A breath alcohol test is commonly used by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and employers of individuals wishing to know a person’s blood alcohol content at that specific moment in time.

A breathalyzer is a term used for a device that tests the alcohol content level in a person’s system at the time the test is conducted. This type of test is different than other types commonly used tests. Because it establishes an alcohol content level that is in the system currently and not what was consumed and expunged days ago.

A breathalyzer test is administered by a certified breath alcohol technician and a chain of custody form is utilized through the process. In the event that a breath alcohol test has a positive result on the initial screening, the technician will administer a confirmation test approximately 15 minutes after the first initial test was conducted.

Breath alcohol testing is commonly used for employees regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) or individuals on court ordered probation or in a substance abuse treatment program. A breath alcohol test is also the common method used by law enforcement to determine if a person is driving under the influence of alcohol.

ETG Alcohol Testing

American Drug Testing provides ETG alcohol testing for individuals needing to determine if a direct metabolite of alcohol is present in the system and if alcohol has been consumed within the last 80 hours. The ETG test is a urine test and is analyzed by a laboratory and the result is verified by a Medical Review Officer.   The ETG Alcohol Test has a detection period of up to 80 hours.

An ETG test can be analyzed in conjunction with other types of drug screens such as a 5 panel, 10 panel or 12 panel urine drug test.

ETG tests are commonly used for individuals on court ordered probation, child custody proceedings and persons in a substance abuse treatment program.

Ethyl glucuronide (ETG) is a metabolite of ethyl alcohol which is formed in the body by glucuronidation following exposure to ethanol, usually from drinking alcoholic beverages. It is used as a biomarker to test for ethanol use and to monitor to document alcohol abstinence in situations where drinking is prohibited, such as by the military, in professional monitoring programs (health professionals, attorneys, airline pilots in recovery from addictions), in schools, liver transplant clinics, or in recovering alcoholic patients. In addition to its use to monitor abstinence and detect drinking ETG also has potential for monitoring amount of alcohol use over time because it can be detected in hair and nails, though the effectiveness of this has not yet been proven.
